Since 2014, AMIK has partnered with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Pessamit Band Council to assess the biomass of soft-shell clams on their territory. Certain areas were studied during inventories performed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in 2005 and 2010. Continuing this study has allowed AMIK to monitor and assess the soft-shell clam population available for harvest.
It involved carrying out preliminary tests, establishing sampling plans, performing visual inspections, performing sampling on the banks, providing analysis results to our partners and offering recommendations to the community about exploiting this resource.
