The objective of this activity is for AMIK to assess the potential and sustainability of a commercial sea cucumber fishery (Cucumaria frondosa) in the sector between Nutashkuan and Pakua Shipu.
Developing exploratory fishing of this species would allow Lower North Shore communities to perform a stock assessment; develop fishing activities (resources permitting) as an alternative and in addition to traditional snow crab fishing; and ensure additional funding on the long term.
Between July 2017 and March 2018, the project will bridge gaps regarding dispatching and information on the density and size-structure of the sea cucumber, allow the mentoring of three Innu fishermen and receive recommendations on the future development of this sustainable fishery.
